Brother has put its latest mono laser print engine into a number of different printers and multifunction machines in several product ranges. The DCP-7030 is at the lower end of its triple-function range, which provides colour scanning and mono copying, as well as mono laser print.

Although the flatbed scanner positioned on top of the print engine is a bit wider than the printer itself, Brother has engineered a gentle expansion in its lines, so the unit has a well-integrated look. It sits quite squat on the desktop, as well, so is unobtrusive in a home office or small business environment. Although there’s no automatic document feeder on this model, the flatbed includes a separate glass strip at the end of the flatbed, normally used when feeding paper for scanning. This makes the scanner section wider than it otherwise need be.

Coloured in pale grey and cream, the device looks a bit less severe than some of the black and silver units on offer and its control panel is commendably simple. Although the copy function panel includes enlargement and reduction, contrast adjustment and up to four pages per sheet, the single row of buttons is easy to understand and the large Start and Cancel buttons at the right end of the row are hard to miss.

Brother DCP-7030 Laser MFP

The 2-line by 16-character LCD display is well used, but is sorely in need of a backlight. Even when standing directly over the machine, reflections can make it very difficult to read and if you have it on the desk beside you, characters can sometimes be impossible to make out. The whole of the scanner section hinges up to cope with papers jams, though we had no problems during testing. It doesn’t need to be lifted to get at the drum and toner cartridges, though, as these slide in from the front, once the front cover has been folded down. The only sockets at the rear of the machine are for mains power and USB 2.

The software bundle installs in one simple operation from a supplied CD and includes Nuance’s PaperPort document management and OmniPage optical character recognition applications. There’s a quick and simple Control Centre application from Brother itself, as well.

The drum and toner, although in separate cartridges, slide into place as one and you’ll be able to replace the toner roughly six times, before needing to swap out the drum cartridge as well.

Brother may not be the biggest name in printers – they tend to be overshadowed by some of the other manufacturers – but they do tend to produce some well-known and popular units. The question is whether or not you should add one to your home or office. Here is a look at some advantages and disadvantages of this brand.

Pros of Buying a Brother Printer

There are a number of advantages to purchasing a Brother inkjet or laser printer.

• Price. In comparison to the other brands, Brother’s models are quite reasonable in terms of their price tag. For example, you can find a laser printer with wireless capabilities for just over $100. You can also find an all-in-one inkjet unit for around $80 which is very inexpensive.
• Reputation. Brother has been around for a long time. Older users may remember learning how to type on Brother typewriters or using Brother word processors before computers hit the market in a big way.
• Reasonable operating costs. Unlike some brands, Brother does not have a reputation for charging a fortune for Brother ink cartridges and toner. In fact, operating one of the units can be very affordable.

Cons of Buying a Brother Printer

Everything isn’t rosy with Brother printers, of course. There are some problems that consumers have noticed and that might cause you to rethink your desire to buy one of these printers.

Poor customer service. As with Dell, Brother has had some major customer service complaints in recent years and consumers have been very vocal about these troubles on the Internet.

Not equal in performance. Brother does offer a wide selection of printer options but they are not all created equal. Customers seem to prefer the quality of the laser printers to the all-in-one units which seem to have more than their fair share of problems.

Automatic head cleaning. To maintain high quality printing, the heads of your printer need to be cleaned periodically and this uses up some of the ink. With some Brother units, the head cleaning is automatic and can even occur in the middle of a print job (or fax job if you’re using a multifunction unit). Other units allow you to schedule these cleanings. However, if the cleaning is being done too frequently you may be wasting ink.

Using All of the Ink

One complaint a few consumers seem to have with some of the Brother units is that they stop working before the ink is completely empty. That means you’d end up paying for ink that ends up thrown away.

Getting a Brother?

While there are some plusses and minuses to Brother printers in general, you’ll want to investigate some individual models on your own before making a final decision and picking the right printer for your specific needs.

Get ready to be blown away with the latest technology available to the printing industry incorporated in Brother’s latest printers. Added to the Brother UK store printer catalogue for release in the last quarter of 2007 are the Brother HL-4070CDW and the Brother HL-4050CDN laser printers.

The HL-4070CDW is Brother’s latest wireless duplex color laser printer. It features a built-in wireless network which gives the user a completely hassle-free set ups. There is no need for cables and wires in Brother’s flexible style of catering to your printing needs. Data sent over the wireless network is guaranteed to be completely safe and secure with SSL encryption.

Both the Brother printers are sure to give you speedy service providing you with your first print in less than 16 seconds. Fast is not fast enough with both printer’s maximum capability of up to 20ppm monochrome printing speed and up to 20ppm color printing speed.

Another common feature is the capability for duplex printing. Both Brother printers HL-4070CDW and HL-4050CDN can produce double sided outputs efficiently and quickly making these the best printers on the market for making professional booklets, reports, presentations, and the like. These Brother Printer models’ built-in duplex printing allows users to save on photo paper as well as on printer ink cartridges.

The latest Brother printers give up to 2400 x 600 dpi print resolutions on their outputs. Both also sport individual color toner cartridges, which have high capacity and high yields providing for less frequent replacements, and 300 megahertz processors. The HL-4070CDW and the HL-4050CDN have expandable 64 megabyte memory.

Brother HL-4070CDW and Brother HL-4050CND feature PCL6 and BR-script emulation. They are also outfitted with USB2 connections. This gives the client an option to print files and images directly from a flash memory drive without the effort of having to connect to a computer.

These hot new items in Brother’s printer collection have a 300 sheet paper input capacity. They also sport paper trays with up to 250 sheet paper capacity. The HL-4050CND and HL-4070CDW, on top of the 250 sheet paper capacity, also have up to 500 optional sheet paper capacities.

The latest innovations in the two Brother printers are not so different from each other in terms of features. The HL-4070CDW simply offers users with a wireless network that HL-4050CND cannot. The added bonus of having a wireless network can prove to be a big difference for some users, while for others it may not. Either way, both printers are exceptionally remarkable in design and are worth the standard retail prices of $492.77, for the HL-4070CDW, and $424.60, for the HL-4050CND.

In the uptake of computer printing requirements, it is apparent that laser printer users value print speed, quality (output resolution) and yield (number of pages produced per minute) performance. Given the laser printer’s yield and output reputation, users without a doubt expect only to get a good number of printouts for a particular gram load of toner; along with the delivery of clear, good-contrast and impressive quality prints.

Since output is largely dependent on toner quality and print capacity, the exclusive use of OEM toner cartridges is often recommended to sustain pertinent print standards. Nonetheless, OEM replacement cartridges are generally expensive and this has prevented many users from taking full advantage of their laser printer’s utility. But it did not take too long for more affordable options to hit the printer accessories market; particularly with the emergence of toner refill kits.

Brother Toner Refill Kit

Productivity is high for toner refill products such as the Brother TN-350 toner refill kit and output quality likewise matches with that of OEM replacement cartridges. Manufacturers of remanufactured toner cartridges and toner refill kits maintain an intimate focus on the yield capacities as well as quality of their toner products to sustain the following of loyal users. The use of modern manufacturing methods and efficient toner handling techniques put forth the production of high grade toner powder that is as reliable as its OEM counterpart.

In the use of a Brother Toner refill kit, the refill toner powder generated around 2400 to 2600 pages of impressive monochrome prints; producing rich black prints and subtle shades of gray that result to clear, legible and professional-looking outputs. The Brother TN-350 toner refill kit, meanwhile, is compatible for use on the cartridges of the following Brother laser printers: HL-2040, MFC-7220 and DCP-7020. In terms of costing, users can generate savings of up to 80% off the retail price of an OEM toner replacement cartridge and as much as 29% from the price of a remanufactured toner cartridge.

So how do we know if the toners need to be replaced? Laser printers are programmed to alert the user (through a flashing light) once the printer is low on toner supply. When that happens, then it’s time to refill the cartridge with a Brother TN-350 toner refill kit. Simply switch the printer off, pull out the cartridge from its bin and perform the quick refill. Once completed, position the cartridge back to its bin; turn on the printer and resume print jobs. It’s that easy! Why, the package even comes with an easy understand instructional material for your convenience. Moreover, you get over-the-phone customer service for after sales inquiries with every purchase of a Brother toner refill kit.

Brother Printer Cartridge

The refilling of this cartridge is messy therefore it is advised that gloves should be worn and the place where refilling is done should be covered with a newspaper or some other absorbent material.

The following steps can guide you to an easy refill of your brother printer cartridges. The different models have little variations in the procedures other remaining the same.

Brother printer cartridge LC01C, LC01Y, LC01M and LC01BK (MFC 7000 series)

1. Place any absorbent material like a towel underneath before refilling the brother ink cartridges.

2. After filling ink in the syringe bottle remove the needle and put the cone shaped adaptor on it.

3. Find the hole in the cartridge through which the ink flows out and turn the exit port down facing your lap.

4. Slowly inject the ink from the syringe bottle into the cartridge until the ink starts coming out of the vent hole and is not foamy.

5. Now turn the cartridge the other way round so that the vent hole faces you and the exit port is towards your lap.

6. Put the needle back into the syringe bottle and inject the needle into the vent hole. Continue injecting till the ink comes out of the exit hole and stops foaming.

7. Leave the cartridge in this position for about ten minutes. Then repeat the 6th step and let it rest for another ten minutes.

8. Install the cartridge in the printer. If it has to be transported then an electrical tape can be used to cover the exit and vent holes but must be removed before printing.

Brother printer cartridge for Brother MFC-7150 and MFC-7160

There is a sponge inside the cartridge which makes the refilling procedure sticky. The first step remains the same.

1. Locate the exit hole at the bottom where there is a large plug.

2. Also locate the vent hole at the bottom which exists on the same side as the large handle on the top of the cartridge.

3. Turning the exit port towards the lap place the vent hole to the right and vice versa. Seal the exit port with a black electrical tape.

4. Take out the handle on the top of the cartridge. Inside you will see two metallic seals, the smaller one round and the larger one rectangular. Either remove the seals or make holes in them.

5. To fill the syringe bottle with ink squeeze the syringe bottle and the needle be inserted into the ink bottle. Relax the grip and let the syringe suck the ink into the bottle.

6. Taking the syringe bottle slowly inject the ink into the sponge deeply through the rectangular hole till the sponge saturates.

7. Also inject ink in the round hole till the outer chamber is full. After injection seal the round hole with black electrical tape carefully. Also seal the rectangular hole with tape.

8. Put the plastic handle back on the top. Take the cartridge to a sink and remove the tape from the bottom. Let the extra ink drops flow out.

9. Printer should be installed now.

Brother printer cartridge LC41C, LC41Y, LC41M, and LC41BK

In this model the ink is retained because of the valve. The first step is the same.

1. Find the label saying LC41 with the letters such as C, M, Y or BK representing colors.

2. Holding the label side up, on the right side find a window towards the top of the cartridge. Make a hole in the window with a smoldering iron or some heated metal thing.

3. Fill the syringe bottle like step 5 mentioned above.

4. Inject the ink slowly with the syringe bottle into the window on top right of the cartridge. Fill the entire cartridge.

5. Seal the window with black electrical tape.

6. Install in the printer.

Brother printer cartridge HJ100 and HJ400

There is very difference in this cartridge. The first step remains the same.

1. Start with a screw in the vent hole which is opposite to the longest side of the cartridge which is opposite to the print head.

2. Draw the plug out with screw. Fill the syringe bottle half with ink and insert in the hole. Inject slowly and deeply into the sponge.

3. Expect some dripping. Tape the cartridge you have to transport it.

Laser Toner Cartridge

The refilling of a laser toner cartridge is very mush similar to adding petrol or gas to your car. The refilling of toner should be done at a place where there is no breeze. It can burn so work where there is no flame. Also do not inhale it as it is irritating.

The three basic types of laser toner cartridges are:

o Canister: a tube for holding toner

o Drum: a cartridge with gears and a drum which has a gelatin coating

o Toner and developer: similar to drum cartridge but using toner and developer both.

Canister Cartridge

1. Spread some absorbent material like a towel or newspaper. Locate a plug at the end of cartridge.

2. Remove the plug if you find it. If you don’t then create a hole which is away from the paper path (smooth plastic surface).

3. If you create a hole then carefully remove the shavings. 4. Shake the bottle of toner and pour the entire bottle into the cartridge with a funnel or paper funnel.

5. Put the plug back and seal it with a black electrical tape.

6. Install in the printer. The refilling of these cartridges can be done a lot of times.

The last few years saw the release of workgroup type, monochrome laser printers. Now sporting stylish, easy to operate and networking features, these powerhouse printing gadgets have also been programmed to function at zippier speeds and deliver increased yields per gram load of toner powder while producing outputs with enhanced print quality.

In this regard, you’ll be pleased to know that the toner cartridge remanufacturing industry has kept pace with pertinent laser printer innovations. And toner refill products such as the Brother TN 9500 toner refill kit have been configured to meet the performance specifications of the Brother HL 2460 Workgroup Laser Printer and its consumable, the Brother TN-9500 High Capacity Toner/Drum Cartridge. Read from this article the top 3 reasons why you should use the toner refill kit.

#1 The refill toner is more affordable than the OEM toner. Replacing the emptied cartridge with a brand new, high capacity toner cartridge can cost the user as much as $190. Imagine how expensive it would be to do frequent replacements in any given month. But did you know that an emptied cartridge can still be recycled for 2 to 3 cycles of laser printing?

Brother Laser Printer

The toner bottle supplied with the Brother TN 9500 toner refill kit contains the same gram load as the OEM high capacity toner cartridge but is priced 86% lower. Now that is equivalent to $151 savings when the user opts to refill the used cartridge instead of buying a new OEM cartridge. Say an office department returns a monthly, consumable consumption rate of 3 replacement cartridges. Refilling an emptied replacement cartridge twice then can cut down the printer consumable budget by 86% the cost of 2 OEM toner cartridges.

#2 The toner refill kit efficiently handles multiple print jobs. Think the use of a toner refill kit can affect the yield performance of the HL 2460 laser printer? Think again! The refill toner supplied with the kit has been manufactured with the right particle dimension and composition to meet the performance specifications set for the laser printer. Now that only makes the toner refill product primed for high printing speeds of as much as 24 ppm (pages per minute) and for yields of up to 11,000 pages at a coverage of 5%.

#3 Print quality is not sacrificed despite the cost. Low cost does not necessarily imply inferior print quality. Thus, Brother TN 9500 toner refill kit users need not worry on its print output. With producers adhering to strict quality control standards in the manufacture of its high grade toner powder, users are assured of the right print consistency every time. Much like the quality delivered by OEM toner cartridges, users enjoy sharp monochrome texts, smooth grays and solid graphics printouts that are reminiscent of the laser printer’s resolution potential of 2400 x 600 dpi (dots per inch).

In the end, it is right to say that the Brother TN 9500 toner refill kit meets head on with the powerful print engine of the HL 2460 to satisfy the high volume, networked and multiple print jobs necessitated in a fast paced working environment – at rock bottom prices!

In spite of the fact that a Brother printer costs lesser than other brands and has a remarkably fast printing speed, there are numerous problems associated with this printer. The top few problems which a Brother printer is notorious for are its unreliability, short life, printing errors and paper jams. Certain printer models produced by Brother have seen to last only a few months, say two or three months.

Very often a paper is jammed in the mid way. Dealing with the paper jams is next to impossible. If one tries to remove it, it often results in the breaking of fuser. Not all, but certain specific models produced by Brother have proved to be of very poor quality. They even feel extremely light, flimsy and sub standard. Getting the machine replaced with another piece results in the same flaws.

A very common problem with nearly all the models of Brother printer is that they produce irritating noise during their operation and during the cooling phase. These sounds are unbearable for some people. They take extraordinarily long durations to warm up and cause voltage to drop by substantial amounts. Most of the prints produced by a Brother printer are faulty, leading to the wastage of paper and ink. Prints are usually dull, and are in no way comparable to the lab quality.

Brother Printer

The Brother toner employed in Brother laser printer is very costly and is consumed too quickly. A brother laser printer is only good enough for printing text, but not images. It is absolutely useless for graphics, pictures, heavy stock and envelopes. The physical parts of the printer like its top cover are not strong enough. It is known for giving rise to electrical problems and blows ones circuit breaker quite often.

A brother printer produces curled, twisted and warped papers. It does not align the paper automatically. One has to take great care while inserting the paper so that it is properly aligned. More than often, the roller leaves ugly marks, spots and shadows on the paper, making it unworthy of professional use.

Brother technical support is not very helpful for people trying to have their faulty machine work, fixed or exchanged. The user manual, too, does not contain adequate information to guide the users. Often, the design is so defective that the tray size does not match with that of a standard A4 size sheet and the cartridge is too hard to be taken out. The printer does not carry a cable when purchased. A Brother printer never lasts more than a year. The type of problem depends on the model. Some models have been found to be much more problematic and troublesome as compared to others.
